Doctor says stimulants cause enlarged heart and can’t be on them long term? Huh?

My friend and I both have ADHD and both take Vyvanse. She told me that when she went in for her annual check up, her GP told her that people on adhd medications have to have their heart checked regularly for enlargement via an ECG because ‘stimulants cause heart enlargement’ and ‘that’s why you can’t be on these medications long term’. This is coming from the doctor that originally diagnosed and started her on medication. I think she was diagnosed over 4 years ago. She’s in her mid 20s, says she’s never had any heart issues and tells me she doesn’t take any other medications (I assume she’s being honest).

Does this sound right to any of you? I’m very particular and have done a ton of research on Vyvanse, and I’ve never come across the heart enlargement, though theoretically I realize it is a possibility because of its biological mechanisms. I’ve never heard my doctor say anything of the sort. He doesn’t do ECGs on me.

She was very certain that her doctor used those exact words as she’s in a medical profession. The doctor didn’t say something like ‘there’s a slight chance it can start to affect your heart’ etc. The statement about not being on them long term doesn’t make sense either? ADHD meds are specifically for long term treatment (or at least Vyvanse is?) Am I missing something here? It all sounds a bit out there.

My friend is stressed because her doctor had never said anything like this in the entire time she had been taking Vyvanse and feels like this came out of the blue. She says this medication has been life changing for her, and is upset at the thought that she suddenly will have her doctor say randomly one day ‘ok, you now have to stop taking it.’

Even if it does have some truth to it, why did the doctor bring it up only now?

Thanks so much for your insight!
