Are these two plants too close together?

I have a Wild Rose (left) that was doing poorly but now has tiny new growths and a woolyleaf ceanothus (right) that's hanging on. I'd gotten the ceanothus at a plant sale because it was the only varient left, but after looking at calscape.org I see that it can get very tall and very wide.

I'm assuming this will be a problem down the road, but I don't really have any other places to put the ceanothus. Should it be moved, or will it be able to sense how much room it has and only grow to that size? Thanks!
