Im Indian and have rarely (ever?) had great Indian food in nyc. Pls reccommend.

I’ve lived in NYC for 15 years. I grew up in Maryland. I’m of Gujarati descent, and grew up eating homecooked gujarati food which is mostly veg, but my family also made chicken and fish.

I’ve had sooo much mediocre to inedible Indian food in NY. Even at places that are supposed to be popular. I don’t get it?

Of all my time in NYC the best south Asian food I’ve had is:

Dosa Delight - Jackson Heights Nawabi Bhoj - Brooklyn Brooklyn Curry Project - food stall at fort Greene farmers market. Korai Kitchen - Jersey City

I’d LOVE to find more go to spots when I’m not in the mood to cook myself. Surely they exist? I DO NOT want Punjabi food or fusion. My preference is for South Indian, or veg forward or something that doesn’t use too much oil or cream. Indian food does not have to be heavy!

Oh also I’d love to find a great thali! And a good masala fish fry.

Edit: I’m open to high end Indian but in my experience it’s never been better than what I can have at home or at a cheaper place. I have not tried Semma yet. Thanks!
