Why do people read books

So I bought some STEM books a few months ago with hopes to gain useful knowledge. I wanted to gain useful knowledge, but as I go through them, I realize most of it isn’t practical. I’ll just know things, but I won’t be able to do anything with them.

I always thought reading drama, thrillers, or any other non-STEM books was pointless because if the knowledge isn’t useful in the real world, what’s the point?

Now I feel like I have no reason to read any book. Am I missing something?
