Clonidine made my son MORE hyperactive
I’m on a journey finding out the best treatment for my 8 year old son’s ADHD. He does not struggle with inattentiveness or hyperactivity so much as emotional dysregulation, impulse control, sensory processing, and OC ritualizing. Last year, we saw a psychiatrist who prescribed him Clonidine, but the backfiring effect was very noticeable. His extremely patient teacher mentioned how much more hyperactive he was during class, something we hadn’t really struggled with before. The psychiatrist was also surprised, so we took our son off the clonidine and have been giving him magnesium and lithium orotate supplements ever since.
I’m noticing now, though, that my son does get hyper when he’s particularly anxious—Monday mornings before school is a big one after coming off the weekend, and he was especially hyper before his first piano recital. So what I’m wondering is, was the clonidine actually just making him more anxious and it manifested as hyperactivity? And if so, are we treating ADHD or generalize anxiety? I’m curious if anyone else has had an opposite effect from alpha-2 agonists like Clonidine or Guanfacine and were actually more wound up while taking them, and did you ever find out why?
