Theories on George Wilkins’ actions

At the end of the latest episode, The Algorithm says that Quinn, Meadows, and Wilkins all made it down to that tunnel before Lukas Kyle. But The Algorithm says it didn’t get to speak with Wilkins.

What happened down there that he wouldn’t have walked to the end of the tunnel? Is it really as simple as: he saw the tunnel, thought “oh yup here it is I gotta go get Jules”, and then climbed the rope all the way back up, but got tragically murdered by IT before?

Or perhaps it implies that The Algorithm didn’t want to speak to him because he wasn’t an IT person?

Neither of those theories are satisfying to me though, and I feel like I’m missing something here…

Also Meadows must’ve gotten through the door and found out something, then come back, and spent the rest of her time drinking to forget. She obviously didn’t tell Bernard about it either, but thought it was important enough to give him the clue about Quinn’s letter before she died.
