Husband recently passed. Took away his last payment
My husband passed away July 19. He was on SSDI for terminal cancer. Social Security deposited his June payment in the month of July (the month he passed) I called SS and made sure that June payment/deposited in July was ok to use for bills etc. I was told Yes- he is due that June (July deposit) I paid the mortgage and the auto insurance and went to bank to get paper work started to let the bank know he passed away July 19 and I need to formally change 401ks, new beneficiary etc. Gave the bank proof of death and started paper work... Got home and checked on my bank account and my mortgage was not paid and every $ was taken out from other savings accounts. SSA took back his final June payment (July deposited/his death month) So I was -$$$ in my accounts. Not enough to pay mortgage and auto insurance. I had to then clear out my small 401k just to get me out of the negative bank balance Borrow money from someone to now cover the unpaid Mortgage and auto insurance so i don't get canceled. Grrrr. Anyhow I called SSA and told them they shouldn't have taken that final deposit of his out of the bank account. The SSA lady emailed me a link to a form to fill out and mail back in to SS to try and get his last payment back And I found out it is the bank that reports the death and SSA The Treasury grabbed the money out. Anyone know how long it takes after filling out the form to get the payment back into the bank account? This really screwed me up . I needed that final payment to help me get by until the death/spouse survivor application/goes through and kicks in. Sorry for long post. TIA.
