Customer Packed Return

Has anyone ever not put a customer packed return in a box? I returned a pot/pan set (in the manufacturers box) to UPS. The guy pointed out that I was supposed to put the return inside another box. He said he would still put a shipping label on the manufacturers box but at my own risk. I didn’t feel like purchasing a box so I just told him it was fine. Has anyone ever done this?
