ELI5: How do we use straws?

Aren't we sucking using our lungs, and air going in through the wind pipe?

I've heard that theres a flap that shuts when you eat to not get food in your lungs, but when it does cant air not go through it? Forget how we use straws, how do we suck in water from water containers (bottles, cups) in the first place?
