Does anyone recall reading a heated, pointed, 'open letter,' from Hunter to Garcia, when Jerry was still alive? Would've been the nascent days of the Internet (92-95). Read on in body...
I recall snippets of said letter and Hunter was clearly upset and directing his anger and frustration at his old pal. There was a part about the (paraphrasing from 30+ yo memory) 'storms raging outside the windows' of Jerry's cloistered and shuttered hotel rooms (allusion to all of us), but that the real malestrom was inside the room itself (with and rooted in Jerry himself and his situation). There was another bit about 'shutting us all out' and 'padding to the darkened hotel room doors in slippers, telling everyone to go away' and Hunter mentioned 'even me,' in sort of a reverse e tu Brute comment. You could tell Hunter, in very un-Hunter-like fashion, was calling his creative partner out, telling Jerry he didn't like what he was seeing from him. Very few called Jerry out, but this letter clearly did.
I have to assume it got yanked and all traces scrubbed from the internet, out of respect after Jerry's passing. I only bring it up, here, to try to fact-check my memory of something important in the latter-day history of our favorite band, potentially lost. Zero disrespect meant toward either man by bringing this up, both of whom I consider beyond personal heroes. I sure would be interested in re-reading it, though, if anyone knows of a copy...
