Living with pilonidal sinuses - health risks?
Hello everyone, I have been living with pilonidal sinuses for close to 6 years and am wondering if I am risking my health later in life/ setting myself up for something major?
Here is a little background and story about my experience with pilonidal cysts/sinuses just to share and help others in a similar situation. I have had several pilonidal sinuses for close to 6 years now. When I was a freshman in college, I got my first cyst. I got it drained and talked to my doctor, and he told me I would need surgery soon, but honestly, I was too scared to get surgery and didn't want to put my college life on pause.
Fast forward 5 and a half years - I now have three sinuses in total. Two average sizes and one that is like a 'crevas' that has been forming for probably 3 years? Anyway, since my cyst in college (5 years ago), I have not had another. I have religiously taken care of my holes. I shower at least once a day and ensure the area is always dry and free of debris. Basically I am in a 'maintaining' phase, but I would estimate my sinuses grow about 2-5% a year. It is nothing major, but I can notice a difference from years ago if you know what I mean.
So back to my situation/question. I am at a point in my life where I want to take my long-term health seriously. Also, money and time are not a problem anymore. Meaning that if I should get surgery and say goodbye to my holes tomorrow, I could. But if I could stay living like this and not risk my long-term health, then why bother? Thank you for reading, I hope you have a nice day!
