Recent vet grad. Found an awesome clinic with a great learning environment but their case load is intense and they want me to jump right in. I don't think I can keep up with the pace in the beginning. What should I do?
I just graduated in May. I found a clinic that I REALLY like. They really like me too and are desperate for help. They have a great learning environment and overall environment.
The only problem is that they see between 25-45 patients a day, and I'm not sure I can keep up. I know in the beginning I'm going to have to take time to look up differentials and treatment options for a lot of the cases as I learn, and I'mreally worried I'm going to get really behind on schedule. I need to double check this but sounded like there's only one vet taking appointments each day while the other does surgeries and procedures. So I wouldn't be able to offload some of my caseload onto another vet. I asked if there would be flexibility to have a lighter schedule in the beginning and they said "no... well maybe" (hesitantly).
I think at the very least I will tell them I would like to volunteer/shadow them for at least a week before I start, just to get some form of mentorship. (I'd rather not make any money for a little while longer over the massive amount of stress and frustration that I would get from just getting thrown into it. I'm not sure I'm quite ready for that.)
How should I approach this? I know with time I'll be able to keep up, and I really like the clinic so I will be doing my damned hardest to keep up, but I don't think I'm capable of running smoothly right from the get go.
- Does this mean it's not a good fit?
- Am I more capable than I think I am? (As in how long does it actually take to get the hang of it? I'm thinking a couple months at least. My time would be split between the clinic and the shelter, so with one of the clinic days being a procedure day, I'd only technically have one day per week of clinic time. But I'm sure I'd learn applicable skills at the shelter.)
- Is there a way I can compromise with them? How do I approach trying to do this?
