I haven’t lived in Canada for over 3 years now and am terrified to move back due to the cost of living crisis

I’m surprised there are more supportive comments now. If you posted this a few years ago you’d grt the typical passive-aggressive Canadian response of “Don’t let the door hit you on your way out.”

I was actually expecting more of this type of a response and am surprised I’ve gotten so much support. I know what the Canadian bubble mentality is like, but I also understand it’s hard to see things from my perspective if you’ve never lived abroad or broken away from the familiar Canadian lifestyle. I think a lot of Canadians can also be self-righteous and perhaps see my choice as disloyal to my country, but now that people from all generations are being affected by the HCOL it’s probably easier to see where I’m coming from.

People aren’t criticizing you because of their “Canadian bubble mentality” or because they’ve never travelled or lived abroad. You’ve explicitly ignored all the responses that remind you that only those who earn expat western wages are able to live richly in cheap Asian countries. A majority of locals cannot dream to earn those wages and it’s difficult to live on their local wage. Sure, you can ignore that as it benefits you but please don’t patronize those who have a bit of awareness of the inequities of the world as “self-righteous” or that they don’t know any better than their Canadian lifestyle.

I haven’t explicitly ignored every response that’s addressed this issue — I responded to an earlier comment about this exact topic by explaining that I plan to get the Thai digital nomad visa, which would allow me to become a tax resident and contribute towards their system (something I’m happy to do). I also mentioned in that same comment that I do not think the Thai government would have launched this visa scheme if it was not offering a financial benefit to the country’s economy. If they get all the westerners and digital nomads living here to pay income taxes, this is good for them and I think it’s the right thing for them to do. I understand it doesn’t completely fix the issues of westerners potentially driving up the cost of living and if this isn’t a satisfying answer to everyone then that’s fine. But of course I don’t want to live here without making a contribution and do not want to be one of the (many) people who routinely do visa runs to avoid being taxed while still managing to stay here.
